The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti entered production in September 2004 as a 2005 model year car, immediately becoming Ferrari’s most expensive series-production model at the time. Built around an aluminium spaceframe developed with Alcoa, the 612 used a combination of extrusions and castings with an aluminium body welded on. Its 2950mm wheelbase was 350mm longer than the outgoing 456, allowing Ferrari to adopt a front mid-engined layout. The 5.7-litre V12 was mounted further back in the chassis than ever before, improving balance, intake routing, and aerodynamics. A vertically mounted 108-litre fuel tank behind the rear seats helped achieve a 46:54 front-to-rear weight distribution. Suspension consisted of independent double wishbones at all four corners with anti-roll bars, paired with adaptive, electronically controlled dampers. Drivers could choose Normal or Sport mode via a steering-wheel button, with Sport sharpening throttle response, steering, gear shifts, damper firmness, and stability control thresholds. Braking was handled by large ventilated steel discs with four-piston calipers, measuring 345mm at the front and 330mm at the rear—larger than those fitted to the 456M. Five-spoke BBS alloy wheels were fitted, with 18-inch fronts and 19-inch rears. Power came from an updated 5.7-litre 65-degree V12, derived from the 575M Maranello unit. Designated Tipo F133 F, it featured a higher 11.2:1 compression ratio, revised cam timing, skimmed cylinder heads, improved intake flow, updated valve seats, and Bosch Motronic ME 2.7 engine management.
